Secure Data
Solution® Virtual Tape
System and Remote Vault Benefits
The Secure Data
Solution® (SDS) is a patented and
patent-pending virtual tape system and remote vault that
allows an organization to efficiently store and retrieve
compressed and encrypted virtual tape images.
The Secure Data Solution’s benefits include:
Enhanced
Data Protection via Encryption and
Compression
Multiple
Platform Support
-
A single Secure Data Solution can store tape
images that have been created by any combination of
supported systems and drives. These include commonly
installed tape drives that are connected by ESCON,
FICON, or Fibre Channel SCSI. It can be connected to
large-scale IBM mainframes that utilize the z/OS or
z/VSE operating systems, IBM AS/400s, and any UNIX or
open system platforms that utilize IBM’s Tivoli
Storage Manager or HP’s Data
Protector.
Configurable
to Suit Your Needs
Automation
of Tape Movement
-
The Secure Data
Solution is an integrated, custom-configured system
that is built upon an
architecture of non-proprietary, state-of-the-art
computing technology. It is easily customized to your
needs with its included automation
features.
If Physical
Tapes are Needed
-
The virtual tape images
can also be converted to physical tapes at either the
local or remote site with attached tape
drives.
Multi and
Early Read Capabilities
-
Virtual tape images can
be read by other tasks while the original is still
being created.
-
When the remote Secure
Data Solution is connected to computer systems at the
remote site, the virtual tape images are accessible by
the remote computer systems to which it is attached. To
facilitate this, the Secure Data Solution updates the
remote computer system’s tape management system
and OS catalogs to reflect the contents of the remote
Secure Data
Solution.
Environmentally Friendly
-
The Secure Data
Solution normally resides in a standard communications
cabinet.
-
Requires few
environmental resources, freeing up floor space and
reducing power/cooling
costs.
Easily Grows
with Your Needs
-
The Secure Data
Solution is available in a number of configurations
that can satisfy small, medium, or large
organizations’
needs.
-
Virtually no limit to
the number of unique tape volumes that each tape
library can manage—other than what is imposed by
the theoretical limit of the six-character volume
serial number combination (over 2 billion per
library).
-
If virtual tape images
are required at more than one remote site, any number
of secondary remote sites can be established for
further replication of the same virtual tape images;
additional Secure Data Solutions can be installed at
another office, a remote data center, a disaster
recovery provider, or a vital records provider’s
facility.
-
The Secure Data
Solution can support up to 2 petabytes of storage. Data
compression averages approximately 3 to 1 (which gives
an SDS the capacity of maintaining 6 petabytes of raw,
uncompressed data).
Savings, Security &
Reliability
-
The Secure Data
Solution is a cost-effective alternative to an
organization’s physical tape process that saves
staff, environmentals, the cost of replacing physical
tapes, and off-site tape
logistics.
-
The Secure Data
Solution is infinitely scalable. As an
organization’s tape resource requirements
increase, the Secure Data Solution grows with
it—protecting any prior investment made in the
SDS. If greater capacity for tape images is required,
additional storage can easily be added. If more or
different tape devices are required, or more or
different computer systems require connectivity to the
Secure Data Solution, additional SDS Secure Tape
Units™ can easily be added to accommodate the
growth. If in the future, additional remote locations
are required, remote units can be installed. The Secure
Data Solution is field upgradable, with no planned
obsolescence, and growth can be sustained
without the need to retire
components.
-
The Secure Data
Solution provides more reliable access to data than
traditional tapes; improves mount times and tape
performance.
-
The Secure Data
Solution can save an organization the liability from
the loss or theft of sensitive data by its inherent
data encryption and by reducing off-site tape handling
requirements. .
-
Reduces backup window
and the time to recover critical
data.
-
The Secure Data
Solution’s SAN server maintains the tape images
on its Raid 5- or Raid 6-based disk arrays, offering
mirrored state-of-the-art data
protection.
-
Unlike physical tapes,
the emulated tape devices can be defined to hold
substantially more data than a physical cartridge can,
reducing the number of multi-volume datasets, and
simplifying management of these files. Furthermore,
with the Secure Data Solution, precious media is not
wasted, nor is space reserved; it is dynamically
allocated as needed.
Remote
Control
-
The entire Secure Data Solution environment
(all sites) can be managed by a single operator
console.
Easy
Migration
-
The Secure Data
Solution can displace an existing IBM Virtual Tape
System (VTS) and Automated Tape Library (ATL) and
seamlessly migrate virtual or physical tape images from
the IBM VTS and/or ATL onto the Secure Data Solution
with minimal disruption to an organization’s
daily operations.
The
Secure Data Solution is protected by U.S. Patent #
7,293,179; European Patent # 1669872; and others
pending.
